Hi Friends ~

My clients, empty nesters (of the human-children kind) have a charming lakefront yellow bungalow.  Very active and casual, they and their furry children, two golden retrievers and two cats, embrace lake living with all imaginable water activities and bonfires year around.    With either wet or snowy family members in an out several times a day, this room needed to be able to withstand considerable wear and tear.

With all of that in mind, they requested that I design around their current room and lifestyle incorporating pieces they already had, all on a limited budget.

Lakeside Cottage Family Room Floor PlanStarting with the sofa, I selected Ikea’s Ektorp sofa/chaise with a washable slipcover in denim trimmed in yellow.   The human and furry family members can relax, watch TV and enjoy the daily fires in the fireplace during the cold months in Michigan.  Anchoring the sofa and coffee table is a stylish indoor/outdoor rug, which is not only affordable but can withstand wet wear and tear.  When it gets dirty . . . simply take it outside and hose it off!  The pillow selections that can be scattered between the sofa and chair include phrases that capture their attitude as well as bring in the colors of the club chairs and yellow accent color.

Sofa Rug and Pillows

The striped club chairs and ottomans will be a comfy seating option for the couple and frequent guests.  Doing double duty, the ottomans can be placed in front of the fireplace or huddled around the coffee table for board games when company comes calling.  Behind the chairs, the lakeside “landing zone” features another  sturdy indoor/outdoor rug and a rattan bench for taking off flip flops or boots.  The windows are framed with creamy shears, again from Ikea.  I’ve selected Benjamin Moore’s Silver Crest, a pale and silvery grayish/blue/green for the entire room.

Last but not least, I’ve layered artwork, lighting and a garden stool, incorporating a pop of a happy yellow color and texture with the floor lamp.

Can’t you just imagine yourself living here?  I sure can!
